Saint Mary Mackillop: A Woman of Determination
Born in 1842 in Australia, Mary Mackillop faced many hardships early on in life.
Despite facing discrimination from the Catholic Church due to her family’s financial struggles, Mary dedicated herself to educating children in rural areas.
Establishing the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1866, Mary sought to provide quality education to the poor and disadvantaged.
Her dedication to helping others led her to be excommunicated from the Church, but she never wavered in her commitment to her mission.
From Outcast to Saint
Despite being excommunicated, Mary Mackillop continued her work and was eventually absolved by the Church in 1872.
Her determination and resilience in the face of adversity inspired many, and she was eventually canonized as Australia’s first saint in 2010.

In addition to her canonization, Mary Mackillop was also named the patron saint of Australia in 2008.
